Around 50 cars have been smeared with what seems to be human bodily fluid in the German municipality of Hanau near Frankfurt, according to police.
Automobiles, exterior walls and postal boxes were vandalized, occasionally with prohibited symbols, they stated in a official communication.
Officers say they were alerted in the late hours on Wednesday evening, when a resident discovered that a automobile in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been marked with a reddish substance.
The liquid had been placed in the form of a Nazi symbol, they reported.
Law enforcement then found numerous other vandalized automobiles and house walls in the surrounding area.
Nazi symbols are banned in Germany under regulations banning the public display of Nazi-era symbols.
Officials say early analysis show the fluid was likely blood from a person.
"Currently there is no lead as to where it came from; authorities are currently not informed of any physical harm in connection with the event," they commented.
City officials said they were working "to unravel the mystery" and have asked to the community for details.
An important representative commented the incident left him stunned and needed to be resolved quickly.
"This event strikes at the center of Hanau and reopens the wounds of the extremist attack in 2020," he stated on online, mentioning the death of nine people by a gunman targeting residents of migrant background in five years prior.
