RAF Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with France's air force in a coordinated attack targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syria operated by the Daesh militant organization, according to the UK Ministry of Defence.

The site, identified by reconnaissance, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was situated in mountains just north of Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a number of approach shafts providing entry to the site... early reports are that the strike was effective," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the attack late on Saturday and all the aircraft made a safe return, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - enforced militant control over significant areas in Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This strike shows British leadership, and determination to operate in unison with our partners, to stamp out any re-emergence of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," UK Defence Secretary the minister said.

British military aircraft have carried out surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of Islamic State following its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank all the members of our armed forces participating in this mission for their skill and their bravery," Healey commented. "Including them were a great many British troops deployed over the festive period. This action, to take out militants who endanger our security, shows how UK forces are ready to step up, all year round, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and influential overseas."

During December, the American forces executed what it termed a "major assault" targeting Islamic State objectives in the country, subsequent to an assault killed two US servicemembers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations says IS still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand militants in Iraq and Syria.
