European Union Might Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official Says

The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the US on five European individuals working on combating online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe including the French president charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans targeted individuals that were at the heart of campaigns to introduce laws governing US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the decision.

The bans were imposed on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, as well as several activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

The DSA is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders contend the rules are essential to combat hate speech and falsehoods.

This row risks becoming part of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and Europe.
