The star has handed over the full amount of his £25k Mercury Prize cash to the trust for venues, which operates to save the UK's independent live music spots.

The star was presented with the prize on mid-October as his new release the album was declared the top album of the last 12 months.

He has chosen to hand the money over to the trust, in acknowledgment of the crucial part grassroots venues fulfilled in his beginning days.

"I personally couldn't be pursuing what I am doing today if it weren't for all the performances I performed around the region, and further afield, when I was just getting going," said Sam Fender. "These locations are iconic, but they are in difficulty."

From early 2023 onward, more than 150 of these spaces have ceased operations – about one-sixth of the total UK scene.

In the last year, top acts such as Pulp, the group Coldplay, Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all supported the MVT in its attempts to help venues survive, by applying a small levy to their ticket prices, which supports independent venues.

Sam Fender also joined in, collecting over £100k on his live tour to support 38 small stages across Britain.

The donation helped venues that were dealing with imminent closure due to issues stemming from flooding, blazes and family tragedies, as well as permit problems, court cases and neighbor objections.

Other venues were granted monetary aid in upgrading facilities and gear that directly benefitted performers and audiences.

"The concept that revenue from concerts in large arenas supports the smaller venues, where it begins for musicians like me, is just common sense," Fender has stated.

Fender is not the first artist to contribute his award funds to charitable organizations.

In Pulp won the trophy in the year 1996 for their release the album, frontman Cocker declared that the act would donate their cash to the charity War Child.

In 2002, rapper and singer she divided her prize between several charities, like the NSPCC and a Sickle Cell organization.

"And I contributed a grand to my local community centre, to their gymnastics program, because I practiced gymnastics when I was a child and they lacked better apparatus," she explained to the media.

Two years ago, the band donated their funds to the community center that supported their act, in addition to other independent music bodies.

Also 1994 winners the group gave their prize to a charity for MS after a close contact was diagnosed the illness.

"The victory was quite enough," said artist Heather Small. "The cash was the cherry on top but we could do without the cherry, because we had the cake. So our victory affected another person's life."

Recently, the trust shared it had saved several local spots in the South East, by transferring them to community ownership.

The Joiners in that area and the other in that location were purchased under the community ownership scheme, which is backed by the arts council and enthusiasts who purchase "stakes" in the properties.
