This New Horror Film Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Partnership.

We present a dare for those in enduring partnerships who appreciate the horror genre: Sit down with your loved one and stream Together. The 2025 indie hit recently had its launch on a streaming platform on Hulu. At first glance, it may seem like typical body horror, but within Together lies a profound examination about the ways we decide to love one another.

A Debut Feature Investigating The Nuances of Love

Together represents the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, partners that have remained a couple for ten years. Having wed in real life in 2017, the two stars contribute a special spark to their roles, expertly portraying both the joys and frustrations of a enduring union.

The plot starts when the couple transition from the metropolis to the countryside for Millie’s job. A familiar plot device, of course, but that’s mostly where the tropes cease. Together becomes as much a examination of mental states of the pair’s relationship as it is a body horror flick.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While hiking near their rural residence, a violent storm occurs, and the two fall into an hole in the earth. After being trapped overnight there and managing to escape, a supernatural entity takes hold of the duo. This force creates a otherworldly bond between them that goes exceeding typical partnership.

The complete narrative is a slow burn of scares, interspersing moments of hallucinatory nightmares, disturbing (but tastefully done) body horror, and authentically humorous dialogue (sometimes amidst something grotesque). Michael Shanks weaves these elements together neatly and delivers them in a gradually swelling sense of impending doom.

Complex Characterizations

A large part of Together is only the two lead actors, and they deftly portray numerous complexities to the partnership at the film's core. Millie's sense of self and emotional bond is deteriorating due to a distance. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his unwillingness to pursue anything but his floundering music career gradually emerges.

Tim, on the other hand experiences isolation and isolated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve moved to the country and removed from his network of friends. He dreads the notion of utterly sacrificing his individual identity in another person. This fear is amplified by the reality he lacks a driver's license and needs Millie for mobility.

Shanks’ smartest move in this movie refrains from painting Tim or Millie the obvious villain.

Tim and Millie confront the type of challenges that arise in any relationship after ten years. At their core, they still love each other. They share moments of joy, comfort one another, and share intimately at times. But beneath it all, there’s an persistent undercurrent of doubt about their future together.

Allegory and Meaning

While the supernatural forces in Together represent these anxieties of excessive reliance and totally devoting oneself to another person, the metaphor does not come across as clumsy or pretentious. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes provide a ideal counterpart to the character-driven drama. Both the horror and the drama enhance each other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s final act, which remains unspoiled, has created disagreement on the film’s ultimate message about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that single viewers have interpreted the film as a powerful case for avoiding commitment. Meanwhile, a few pairs having disagreements found that the film ended up guiding them to make up.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own interpretation could act as a great barometer of how you perceive partnership. Will the conclusion plant feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you identify in one of the characters and feel frustration, or simply glance toward your partner and utter, “I’d do that for you”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an experiment you can experience at this very moment.

Together is available to watch on the streaming service Hulu now.
