Users Coming Off Weight-Loss Jabs Put On Pounds Four Times Faster Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis suggests that people who stop using popular weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover reduced body mass far faster than those who halt conventional lifestyle plans.

Findings released in a major medical journal shows that while obese people frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"People purchasing these medications should be aware of the potential of quick weight regain when the treatment concludes," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery implies a reversion to pre-treatment weight within about one and a half years.

Analyzing Treatments

The study, which reviewed dozens of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

Researchers emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through dieting generally have a more gradual creep back—around 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

The Reason for the Rapid Regain

Nutrition scientists believe the mechanism of the injections accounts for the amplified weight return.

The injections copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal might result in the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also reduce sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement results in hunger is unsuppressed, making overeating far more likely."

A Chronic Issue?

Health authorities recommend the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

Professionals contend that, considering the high risk of relapse, the treatment is often life-long.

This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "emphasize the long-term character of obesity," akin to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

Patient Accounts

People who have come off the jabs report a powerful resurgence of cravings.

"I experienced something that goes on and you become starving," said an individual.

This challenge is worsened if individuals have not adopted sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Growing Interest

Figures show that millions of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand remaining high.

  • Adoption is greater among women than males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Finally, experts caution that while these medications are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and long-term success likely depends on combined lifestyle management.
